  Be The Difference
Rescue Diver
The foundation of this course is to provide Advanced Open Water Scuba Diver’s a level of awareness and confidence unrivaled by any of your current certifications or specialties you may have achieved. This course will galvanize you as a leader among recreational divers but carries with it a tremendous responsibility. In this 12-skill course you will learn to identify potential incidents, and how to prevent those incidents from becoming a diving emergency. You will develop the techniques needed to manage equipment issues underwater and defuse distressed or panicked diver situations. While rare, emergency situations do arise that could not be anticipated or prevented, and as a rescue diver you will be fully prepared to administer your Emergency First Responder knowledge in realistic simulated scenarios. Most importantly, you will learn the art of self-rescue, and personal accident prevention. Are you ready to take on the challenge and become one of the elite?

How long is the course?
The eLearning portion of the course takes 8-12 hours to complete. This can be completed at your own pace but must be completed prior to beginning your in-water training. Upon successful completion of your theory and eLearning, participants can finish the course in as little as 4 days but may require an additional day or two depending on your progression. Note that if you are planning to combine your EFR and Rescue course together, more time will be required. Check out our Emergency First Responder specialty course for more information.
What if I don’t have enough time to finish the course?
Once you have registered and been issued an eLearning code, your completion of any course requirements will be recorded in your personal record and be valid for 12 months. If you are unable to complete your course in the time allotted or you’re not able to commit to the full course during your visit to Kauai, Seasport Divers is pleased to offer all referral documentation that can be provided at any PADI dive center in the world. You’ll pick up, right where you left off!
Do I need to have my Emergency First Responder Certification before beginning the class?
It’s not required to have your EFR certification or your O2 Administration certifications before beginning the class. Seasport Divers offers combo courses where we can combine your PADI Rescue Certification with your EFR and O2 Administration specialties.

   Knowledge Development and eLearning

PADI Rescue Diver eLearning is an integral part of the course designed to provide you with foundational knowledge and understanding before you engage in practical training with an instructor. Overall, the eLearning component of the PADI Rescue Diver course prepares you comprehensively for the practical aspects of the training by establishing a solid theoretical foundation. It allows you to learn at your own pace and ensures that you're well-prepared to pass your final exam and engage effectively during the practical sessions with your instructor. Here’s how it typically works:

Online Access: Upon enrolling in the PADI Rescue Diver course, you gain access to the PADI eLearning platform. This platform is user-friendly and accessible from various devices, such as computers, tablets, and smartphones.

Self-Paced Learning: The eLearning portion allows you to study at your own pace. You can log in and complete the modules whenever and wherever it's convenient for you.

Interactive Modules: The content is presented in interactive modules that combine text, images, videos, animations and illustrations. This multimedia approach helps to enhance understanding and engagement with the material depending on your style of learning.

Knowledge Development: The eLearning covers topics such as dive stress, accident management, self-rescue techniques, recognizing and managing stress in other divers, navigation, search and rescue and emergency response protocols. You'll also learn about the responsibilities and duties of a rescue diver, oxygen administrator and Emergency First Responder

Assessment and Quizzes: Throughout the modules, there are knowledge reviews, quizzes, and assessments to gauge your understanding of the material. These quizzes help reinforce key concepts and prepare you for the course and the final exam.

Final Exam: At the end of the eLearning portion, there is a final exam that you must successfully complete. This exam typically covers all the material you've learned and ensures you have a solid grasp of the theoretical aspects of rescue diving.

Certification Tracking: Your progress through the eLearning modules is tracked electronically. Once you complete the eLearning and pass the final exam, you'll receive a certification of completion.

Integration with Practical Training: After completing the eLearning portion, you'll attend practical sessions with a PADI Instructor. These sessions focus on applying the knowledge you've gained in real-world rescue scenarios in confined water and open water environments.

The Rescue Diver Course and Emergency First Responder Training

In the PADI Rescue Diver course, you'll engage in a series of activities and learning experiences designed to enhance your ability to prevent and manage diving emergencies. Here’s an outline of what you can expect to do:

3.1 - Rescue Skills Practice: You'll participate in confined water sessions where you'll practice essential rescue skills under the guidance of your instructor. These skills will help you achieve the 12 performance requirements needed to pass the course:

  • Self-Rescue Techniques: Learning how to manage stress, perform controlled emergency swimming ascents, and more.
  • Recognizing and Managing Distressed Divers: Identifying signs of distress and how to respond before distress turns to panic.
  • Assisting a Panicked Diver: Techniques for helping a diver who is stressed or panicked both on the surface and underwater.
  • Navigation: Advanced navigation techniques to manage navigation in various conditions.
  • Search and Rescue: Take your advanced navigation techniques and combine them with search and rescue coordination and best practices to quickly find missing divers and prepare an unresponsive diver for surfacing.
  • Responding to Unresponsive Divers: Practice techniques for bringing an unconscious diver to the surface safely, assess the diver’s condition and be introduced to the administration of in-water emergency assistance while getting them to safety as efficiently as possible.

3.2 - Open Water Scenarios:  You'll apply the skills you've learned in realistic rescue scenarios conducted in open water. These scenarios will simulate various emergency situations where you'll need to demonstrate your ability to assess, respond, and manage the situation effectively.

3.3 - Emergency First Response (EFR) Training (if required): EFR training covers primary and secondary care skills such as CPR, first aid, and sea life related injuries which are crucial for providing immediate assistance in diving incident management or diver emergencies.

3.4 - Knowledge Review and Assessment: Throughout the course, you'll have quizzes and a final exam to ensure your understanding of the rescue principles and procedures. The final exam can be completed as part of your eLearning, however, quizzes throughout the course will help to reinforce your skills and embed your knowledge into muscle memory.

By the end of the course, you'll have gained some of the most valued skills a recreational diver can achieve. You’ll have developed confidence in handling diving emergencies and be capable of assisting other divers, yourself and any professional divemaster or instructor.
