Nā Pali Coast: Kauai’s Most Breathtaking Landmark
The Nā Pali Coast State Park is one of the most stunning landscapes in Hawaii, with its towering cliffs, lush valleys, and turquoise waters. It’s also one of the most iconic Hawaiian sights: it’s been in numerous movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, King Kong, and Jurassic Park. The coastline is so off the beaten path that there’s no direct road access, so here are the best ways to explore it:
- Hiking the Kalalau Trail – One of Hawaii’s most famous hikes, this 11-mile trek along the Nā Pali Coast is physically demanding but rewards you with jaw-dropping cliffside views, lush valleys, and the secluded Kalalau Beach at the end.
- Boat or Kayak Tours – Paddle or cruise along the rugged coastline to explore hidden sea caves, cascading waterfalls, towering cliffs, and spot wildlife like dolphins, sea turtles, and even the occasional monk seal.
- Helicopter Tours – Experience the dramatic beauty of the Nā Pali Coast from above, soaring over steep emerald cliffs, remote beaches, and valleys that are otherwise inaccessible, for a perspective you won’t get any other way.
If you’re coming to Kauai, the Nā Pali Coast truly is a can’t-miss destination.
Kauai’s trails really surprise you. One moment you’re in dense jungle, the next you’re standing on a ridge with the ocean stretching out forever. It’s one of those places where every hike feels like a discovery, no matter how many times you’ve been.

A Paradise for Hikers
If you love hiking, Kauai is the place to be. The island is home to lush and green rainforests, epic mountain ridges, and breathtaking canyon views. There’s truly something for every hiker, so here are some must-visit trails:
Waimea Canyon Trail
Waimea is often called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" - with good reason! If you were airdropped right in the middle of it and nobody told you where you were, you’d probably never guess in the middle of the Pacific. The canyon stretches for miles, with layered red and green cliffs dropping into deep valleys. The trail here is moderately challenging, with some steep sections and loose rocks. Along the way, you’ll pass through forested areas and open ridges with wide views of the canyon below. Waterfalls are visible in the distance, especially after rain. If you’re looking for a hike that combines effort with big payoffs, this one delivers.
Sleeping Giant Trail (Nounou Mountain)
This is a popular east side hike leading to the summit of Nounou Mountain. It’s moderate in difficulty, with switchbacks through forests and along ridges. The climb takes about two hours round-trip, depending on your pace. At the top, you’ll find sweeping views of Kauai’s coastline, Wailua River, and the surrounding countryside. There are a few resting spots along the trail, making it a good choice if you want to take it slow. It’s an easy way to fit in a hike while still leaving time for other activities in your day.
Hanakāpī‘ai Falls Trail
This is a challenging, all-day hike, but the views are absolutely worth it! The trail starts on the Kalalau Trail, heading toward Hanakāpī‘ai Beach before continuing inland. From there, it winds through dense forest, across rivers, and past bamboo groves. It ends at Hanakāpī‘ai Falls, a tall and secluded waterfall that’s worth the effort to reach. The trail is often muddy and requires stream crossings, so be prepared for wet shoes. If you want a hike that feels like a true adventure, this one will check that box. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned hiker, there’s a trail for you.
Discover the Underwater World
Kauai’s waters are home to vibrant marine life, making it a top destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. We might be biased, but it truly is a can’t-miss while you’re spending time on the island!
Kauai’s Top Snorkeling Spots
- Ke’e Beach – In the summer months, this is a beautiful and calm snorkeling spot.
- Tunnels Beach – A stunning reef teeming with tropical fish and sea turtles.
- Poipu Beach – A family-friendly beach with calm waters and abundant marine life.
- Lawai Beach – Very rocky, so bring some shoes! But the views are worth it.
Scuba Diving with Seasport Divers
For those looking to dive deeper, Seasport Divers offers guided scuba dives to explore lava tubes, coral reefs, and encounters with Hawaiian green sea turtles. We also offer dive charters to Ni’ihau, an island outside of Kauai. It’s a “forbidden” island, so unless you’ve managed to score an invite, this is the best way to explore parts of that island. Whether you're a certified diver or a beginner, Kauai’s underwater world is not to be missed.
Discover Kauai’s Majestic Waterfalls
Kauai is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Hawaii. Here are a few you won’t want to miss:
- Wailua Falls – An easily accessible, postcard-perfect twin waterfall.
- Opaekaa Falls – A stunning 150-foot waterfall with a scenic overlook.
- Hanakāpī‘ai Falls – A hidden gem at the end of a rewarding (but challenging) hike.
- Uluwehi Falls – A “secret” waterfall accessible by kayak and a short hike.
From roadside views to hidden jungle hikes, Kauai’s waterfalls are truly pure magic.
Relax on Kauai’s Beautiful Beaches
Kauai has some of the best beaches in all of the Hawaiian islands (we’re just a *tiny bit* biased), perfect for swimming, surfing, or just simply soaking in the sun.
Top Beaches in Kauai
- Hanalei Bay – A picturesque crescent-shaped bay, great for paddleboarding.
- Po’ipu Beach – Calm waters - and frequently visited by monk seals!
- Ke'e Beach – The last beach before the start of the Na Pali Coast.
- Salt Pond Beach Park – Ideal for families with its shallow tide pools.
- Kekaha Beach Park – A long, beautiful stretch of beach where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets!
Take a Kauai Helicopter Tour
We mentioned taking a helicopter tour of the Nā Pali Coast, but we really couldn’t recommend a helicopter tour of the entire island enough! Especially if you’re only here for a few days, these kinds of tours show you the best of the island. Most tour companies will take you by places like:
- The Nā Pali Coast
- Waimea Canyon
- Manawaiopuna Falls (aka "Jurassic Falls")
Go Kayaking in Kauai’s Scenic Rivers and Along the Coastline
pPaddle your way through Kauai’s beautiful waterways for a serene and adventurous experience. There are plenty of options for both river kayaking and open-water kayaking - something for everyone! Some of the top kayaking spots include:- Wailua River – The only navigable river in Hawaii, and a popular spot for kayakers.
- Secret Falls – Paddle up the Wailua River and hike to this awesome waterfall.
- Nā Pali Coast Kayak Tour – Because this is open-water kayaking, we highly recommend booking a guided tour. There are many options, but the best ones are usually the adventurous full-day experiences, paddling alongside cliffs and sea caves.
Wander Through Kauai’s Botanical Gardens
Discover the diverse flora of the island by visiting one of Kauai’s breathtaking botanical gardens. You can choose to wander around on your own, or book a tour to really learn more in-depth knowledge about the different fruits, plants and flowers of Kauai. Some places we’d recommend:
- Princeville Botanical Garden – This area harvests chocolate, honey and various fruits, and tours will often include a tasting of various assortments.
- Lāwaʻi-kai (Allerton Garden) – A beautiful garden you might recognize from movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park or Magnum P.I.
- Limahuli Garden & Preserve – Showcasing native Hawaiian plants and cultural history.
